Another variant of the Development Trust model focuses more on meeting community needs, and a good example is in Hastings where community action is helping to revive the town’s fortunes as a place to live in and visit.
A number of alternative-minded people were attracted by the town’s neglected character and relatively cheap housing. The scheme for St. Mary-in-the-Castle saved a key building from dereliction, and has provided a fine new performance space and arts centre. A concern for quality in the restoration of the Old Town, and in other parts such as the Victorian town centre, has contributed to an increase in property values in a previously disadvantaged area.
