In Hulme, the development of Homes for Change, a block of 50 flats around a courtyard, built over two floors of workspace, a cafe and a small theatre, has provided considerable inspiration for the idea of new forms of urban housing that are more like the continental model. Significantly the scheme was built to much higher energy and noise insulation standards, and the co-operatives are now building a further phase, while the project also forms a test bed for research into ways of minimising energy consumption.
